Find out how to apply for rented housing in the Selby area and who is eligible.
Most social and affordable rented housing is allocated through North Yorkshire Home Choice, the choice-based lettings scheme.
This is our way of allocating homes for rent and shared ownership.
To be considered for both social and rented housing, you will need to register and be accepted as being in housing need.
Each year, we have more than 1,000 housing applications from people with a connection to the Selby area. We can accommodate around 20 per cent of the number of people who apply.
We give the highest priority to people most in need. When you are accepted onto the housing register, we will tell you how we have assessed your housing need. This is broken down into gold, silver and bronze bands. Gold means those people with the highest needs.
The average waiting time for those who were made an offer varied significantly, depending on their needs and area of preference. The more areas and different types of property types you are willing to consider, the better your chance of being re-housed with us.

Under the rural initiative, you will be given priority if you have a local connection to the village where the home is. If no one with a local connection is interested, we will consider anyone who is registered with North Yorkshire Home Choice.
This does not apply to properties in Selby Town and Tadcaster.
We decide that someone has a local connection and they qualify for local lettings if:
In line with the North Yorkshire Home Choice allocations policy, local lettings initiatives may be introduced to respond to local housing need and demand within a specific build or area.
They are used to ensure best management of housing stock supporting rural and city areas regarding demand and affordability and ensuring balanced sustainable communities. Where there is a specific planning agreement, advertised properties will refer to a section 106 planning agreement. This will provide the criteria that must be met to enable a bid for housing advertised.
You will be given priority if you have a local connection to the local parish.
We decide someone has a local connection if:
If no one with a local connection is interested, we will consider people with a connection to the wider Selby area before the whole North Yorkshire Home Choice partnership.
